"Uzbeks
from Ivanovo" get temporary asylum
On March 10, 2009 Federal migration service of Russia in Ivanovskaya
oblast decided to grant asylum to thirteen "Uzbeks from Ivanovo".
This event has become one of the concluding actions of the never-ending fight
for the freedom of fourteen Uzbeks who were detained in Ivanovo (Russia) in June,
2005.
The fact that temporary asylum was granted to the Uzbeks is a very important
precedent when Russia carries out a non-material part of the decision of
European Court. It's also important that the decision was taken on the low
level – by the territorial organ of FMS of Russia. It indicates that the
mechanisms of the international defense become part of Russian system of
granting asylum.
HRC Memorial hopes that it won't take long to organize the departure
of the Uzbeks from Russia. People searching for asylum were many times
illegally removed from Russia. So it still has sense to be alarmed about the
destiny of thirteen Uzbeks.
