Wagner, Georgi Karlovich
Art critic and historian
Doctor of Art History from 1968, State Prize Winner 1983. Leading scholar, author of more than twenty books and two hundred essays on Early Russian art.
Born 1908, Spassk, Ryazan gubernia; died 1995, Moscow.
Graduate of Ryazan Art College (1930), head of the art section of the Ryazan Region Museum. On 21 January 1937 was arrested for having criticized Kaganovich's actions which led to the destruction of Moscow's architectural monuments. The five-year term was served on the Kolyma gold mines; in May 1938 he was arrested again on charges of anti-Soviet plotting in the Kolyma region. Was sent to a penal camp site in Lower Khattynakh; there he had scurvy. Soon began to paint and draw. In 1942 was "liberated" without the right to leave the Kolyma till the end of the war; returned to the Kolyma gold mines as a "free" worker. Designed posters, slogans and settings for amateur performances; was awarded the third prize for a portrait displayed at the 1945 all-Kolyma Exhibition of Fine Arts. After the end of the war he returned to Ryazan. On 19 January 1949 was arrested again as previously tried; in June the Special panel [OSO] sentenced him to eternal exile. Five years were served in Belsk (Krasnoyarsk region) where W. worked in a geological-prospecting party. Was released in 1954 and reinstated in1956. Lived in Moscow.
