Vegener, Leonid Vinfridovich
Stage designer
Born 1908 and died 1991 in Moscow. In 1928 he entered the Moscow Art College named in Memory of the 1905 Revolution; contributed to Vsekokhudozhnik. In 1934 his father and sister were persecuted; in 1941 his father was subdued again. On 17 March 1938 the artist was arrested and given eight years on charges of suspicion of espionage; in autumn 1938 he was sent to Nagayevo Bay (the Soviet Far East), then by a prisoner transport to taiga; in March 1939, after being shifted to Magadan, V. was active at art workshops making settings for perfomances of dramatic groups and cultural brigades. In 1940 he was employed on the construction of the Magadan Theatre of Music and Drama where he became stage designer and producer in 1942. V. designed settings for more than seventeen performances. When "liberated" in 1947 (but still remaining a deportee) he continued his work as a stage designer; in 1955-1958 he was the chief stage designer of the Magadan theatre. In 1958 returned to Moscow where he was active as a stage designer in co-operation with the producer Leonid Varpakhovsky; made set designs for several performances in Moscow as well as in Simferopol, Kostroma and Orenburg.
