Grigoriev, Anatoly Ivanovich

Born 1903, village of Gainy, Perm gubernia; died 1981, Moscow.
His parents were landless peasants. He studied at art workshops in the village of Kudymkar (1921-1923) and the Institute of Art and Technology [Vkhutein] (1925-1930) under Ivan Yefimov and Vera Mukhina. Since 1932, member of the Soviet Artists Union. Concentrated on portrait and decorative-monumental sculpture; since 1934 contributed to exhibitions. On 17 April 1948 was arrested and sentenced by the Special panel [OSO] to eight years in camp; in August of the same year was deported to Norilsk; in March 1949 sent to Lefortovo prison in Moscow. From 4 September 1952 to 7 April 1953 he worked as a special-assignment prisoner in the town of Kuchino, Moscow region; then he was shifted again to camps of Komi Autonomous Republic. Being released on 6 December 1954, he returned to Moscow and was reinstated. Continued to produce portrait sculptures; author of a cycle of portraits of the former camp inmates.
