The case of Dmitriev. Press conference on the eve of the verdict

One of the most high-profile and long political processes of recent years – the proceedings against Yuri Dmitriev, a researcher of Stalinist repressions and head of the Karelian Memorial, will finish in the coming days. The case was initiated in December 2016. The court will deliver a verdict on charges of producing child pornography, sexual abuse, and violence against his minor adopted daughter, as well as possession of the main parts of firearms. The trial was closed, observers and the media were not allowed to participate. Dmitriev was in custody for more than three years, from December 2016 to February 2018, and from June 2018 up to now. The maximum term for a 64-year-old historian is 20 years in prison.

In July 2017, after studying the available materials, the Memorial Human Rights Center concluded that the criminal case was falsified and Yury Dmitriev was recognized as a political prisoner. Dmitriev's innocence was confirmed by a court decision in April 2018. However, a new charge was brought against the historian, and the case was returned to court. None of the charges were recognized by Dmitriev; the Memorial is confident that he is completely innocent.

His persistent search for the burial places of those killed during the Great Terror, compiling the lists of victims, and preservation of memory in places of Stalinist executions are the obvious reason for the persecution. Due to Dmitriev’s work, Sandarmokh, the largest of the shooting grounds of Karelia, became an internationally recognized memorial complex. The persecution of Dmitriev comes against the background of the attempts to rewrite the history of Sandarmokh and to pass the victims of the NKVD executions off as World War II victims, who were allegedly killed during the Finnish occupation.

Dmitriev’s case caused a huge public outcry in Russia and abroad. The defenders of the historian assert their right to commemorate the murdered ancestors, as well. Yuri Dmitriev continues to work in custody – in the past three years, three books have been prepared for publication with the help of friends and colleagues. His latest book, «Sandarmokh site of commemoration», was published in December 2019. «Krasny Bor» and «They are remembered by the motherland. Book of memory of the Karelian people» were published in 2017.

The press conference will be devoted to all the aspects of the case available for open discussion, the background of the persecution of Dmitriev, his study of repression and commemoration work.

Participants of the press conference:

  • Victor Anufriev, attorney of Yuri Dmitriev;
  • Anatoly Razumov, historian, head of the «Returned Names» center of the Russian National Library;
  • Irina Flige, member of the Board of the International Memorial Society, researcher of the burial sites of victims of mass terror;
